Assisted living can very well be one of the most fantastic elder care experiences a senior can enjoy, especially in those sunset years of life. As winter rolls in, especially across the northern tier of the country, it means a lot less time and opportunities to be outside.
It also means some unhealthy habits can return. For those who have chosen assisted living for their future or are considering it, when winter begins strolling its way in, threatening to bring snow and freezing temperatures in its wake, it’s a good idea to remember what the warmer summer months bring in addition to just an opportunity to bask in the sun, go for leisurely strolls in the park, and enjoy not freezing every time you step outside.
Vitamin D
While an aging person may be advised by their doctor to avoid spending too much time out in direct sunlight, or they have to wear more clothing, long sleeves, or wraparound sunglasses, vitamin D is a powerful nutrient for stronger bones and helps boost energy.
Many people get a boost in vitamin D from those longer, summer days. During the winter, though, exposure to direct sunlight drastically diminishes. Research has shown that more than three-quarters of people are not getting enough vitamin D because of a lack of sunlight (Central Washington University), and that’s across all age groups, and that is higher for seniors.
This is exacerbated during the winter months. That’s why it’s vital for seniors to focus on foods and perhaps supplements that can help them increase their vitamin D consumption during post longer winter months at assisted living (so long as they consult their doctor before taking anything new).
Blood Pressure
A lot of people in their golden years of life deal with elevated blood pressure levels. When you’re trying to stay warm, as your body is trying to regulate its own internal temperature, that often increases blood pressure even more.
It becomes critical, then, that the right assisted living facility is maintained at a comfortable, safe temperature indoors. It’s also important to dress warmly whenever you do have to venture outside.
Overall Physical Health
Many people, regardless of age, let their health, fitness, and exercise levels wane during the long winter months, especially in colder climates. While you can’t control the weather, you can control your focus and how much exercise you receive, even when you are at a quality elder care assisted living facility.
The better assisted living facilities will have fitness or exercise options available to the residents. Just because you may not be able to go to a local park, easily get to the mall, and do other walking activities, you should still be able to exercise.
This is a crucial component of healthy living, no matter your age. Just because you may be in your late 70s, 80s, or 90s, that doesn’t mean exercise is no longer important or beneficial.
As winter begins showing its face once again, for those seniors in assisted living, now is the perfect time to consider what steps to take in order to stay healthy while in assisted living.
