The ties formed quickly Thursday between Routt Catholic High School freshman Daniel Brahler and 85-year-old Gen Neymei. It is what Routt theology teacher Maureen Bradish hoped would happen. Thirty-four freshman, making up two classes, visited Knollwood Retirement Village for a “faith journey” assignment — an interview with a senior about their life story and how their faith affected them. This is Bradish’s first year at Routt. She decided to have her students do something hands-on with the topic of faith — something she said is her life and reason for being here.

“It’s good to leave the classroom and experience it in Jacksonville as a reality,” Bradish said. “Maybe the memories created will help them in their own faith.” The assignment was to demonstrate to students how good and hard times affect faith. The two classes studied the life of Jesus Christ, focusing on his faith journey, and the students were required to write about their own journeys.

“Life is like a tapestry,” Bradish said. “The gold threads are good times in life, the black threads are hard times and you can’t see the tapestry until it’s flipped over.” Neymei moved to Wisconsin in 1961 and came to Knollwood Retirement Village to be closer to his daughter in Winchester after breaking his hip four years ago. read more...
